In our interactions with our social environment, it is primarily things or activities with ‘value’ that are considered meaningful and therefore desirable: a house, a car, holidays, nice clothes, expensive jewellery, etc.

Possessions and money play an increasingly central role.

Intangible values, on the other hand, are marginalised:

  • The owl as a symbol of intellectual values such as wisdom, reason, knowledge, discipline, etc. (at the top of the picture)
  • The handshake as a symbol of personal values such as politeness, tact, consideration, respect, trust, etc. (on the far left of the picture)
  • The family as a symbol of moral values such as community, friendship, solidarity, loyalty, honesty, etc. (far right in the picture)
  • The heart as a symbol of spiritual/religious values such as charity, compassion, forgiveness, mercy, etc. (bottom of the picture)
